Treatment of Chronic Insomnia: Sleep Disorder Due to Anxiety and Depression
There are many types of sleep disorders, and chronic insomnia is just one of them. Chronic insomnia is the most serious case which can last for a long period of time. Insomnia affects the normal individual function resulting to a reduced productivity.
Chronic insomnia is classified into primary and secondary types.
Anxiety and depression are general causes of insomnia, along with poor sleep, hormonal imbalance, and circadian rhythm disorder. Chronic insomnia is also a symptom of a more psychological or physiological disorder.
Clinical depression is a state of melancholia, sadness, or despair that has become disruptive to the individual’s daily activities. Depressive disorder can be a single-episode or recurrent periods of depression brought about by discrete events over the entire life span.
Depression and anxiety can be ‘co-occurring’ (occurring together or independently) or it can also be co-morbid (with mood congruence, occurring together or independently). There are two clinical colloquialisms widely accepted, namely:
- agitated depression
- akathitic depression
Agitated depression brings about chronic insomnia, and these persons have suicidal tendencies.
Emotional stress, which includes anxiety and depression, causing chronic insomnia needs to be evaluated by doctors. And naturally, the treatment should follow. Once anxiety and depression have been treated, chronic insomnia can be addressed more clearly.
Perhaps it’s high time for you to start relaxing. Emotional stress impedes sleep. Prevention is still better than cure. Avoid mental stimulation before bedtime, like thinking about things that gives you anxiety and depression.
